At Marshall Chiropractic, we frequently treat patients with back pain, neck pain, and headaches. While our treatment plans address the root cause of your pain, adding targeted stretches to your daily routine helps you find relief faster and makes your adjustments last longer. Stretching is a powerful way to ease muscle tension, support your spine's natural alignment, and keep you feeling flexible and energized.

Stretch 1: The Chin Tuck — Neck Pain & Posture

The Chin Tuck Stretch is highly effective for neck pain and tension. It strengthens the deep neck flexor muscles and eases strain from forward-head posture, which is common for anyone spending long hours at a desk or on a phone. Sit or stand with a tall spine, gently draw your chin straight back as if making a subtle double chin, hold for five to ten seconds, and repeat ten to twelve times. This supports spinal alignment and reduces stress on the upper back.

When to do it: Perform this stretch after long periods of sitting or screen time. It can be done at your desk, in the car, or on the couch — no equipment needed.

Stretch 2: The Seated Forward Bend — Lower Back

For lower back discomfort, the Seated Forward Bend stretches the lower back and hamstrings. Tight hamstrings pull on the pelvis and disrupt spinal alignment. Sit on the floor with legs extended and feet flexed, then slowly hinge forward at the hips reaching toward your toes while keeping your spine long. Hold for twenty to thirty seconds. Never round your back — imagine your chest moving toward your toes.

Stretch 3: The Doorway Stretch — Upper Back & Posture

The Doorway Stretch opens up tight chest muscles that pull the shoulders forward and create strain in the upper back. Stand in a doorway with hands on the frame at shoulder height, step one foot forward, and gently press your chest through until you feel a stretch across your chest and shoulders. Hold for twenty to thirty seconds. This counteracts rounded shoulders and promotes better posture throughout the day.

Consistency is the key. A few minutes each day significantly reduces muscle stiffness and enhances your mobility. Move slowly and never push past mild discomfort. If you have persistent pain, schedule an appointment and Dr. Marshall will guide you through the right stretches for your specific condition.
