As July progresses, back-to-school season is on the horizon. Parents are shopping for supplies, buying new clothes, and preparing children for the transition. While most focus on academic readiness, proper posture and spinal health are equally important for your child's success.
Poor posture during the school year affects not just your child's back health—it impacts concentration, energy levels, and academic performance. At Marshall Chiropractic & Wellness Center, we encourage families to prioritize spinal health as part of back-to-school preparation.
Why Posture Matters for Students
Children spend six to seven hours daily in school, much of that sitting at desks. If their posture is poor, they're spending a significant portion of their childhood with spinal misalignment.
Poor posture creates immediate problems. It reduces blood flow to the brain, affecting concentration and memory. It compresses the lungs, reducing oxygen intake. It creates muscle tension that leads to fatigue and headaches. By day's end, many students with poor posture struggle to focus, feel exhausted, and have headaches.
Additionally, poor posture habits established in childhood often persist into adulthood. The most important time to establish good posture is during the school years.
Common School Year Posture Problems
Heavy Backpacks
Many students carry backpacks weighing 15-20 pounds or more. When packed incorrectly or worn improperly, heavy backpacks pull the spine forward and compress the lower back.
Solution: Ensure backpack weight doesn't exceed 10-15% of your child's body weight. Pack heavier items closer to the spine. Use both shoulder straps—never sling it over one shoulder. Consider rolling luggage for heavier loads.
Computer and Device Use
Distance learning and increased screen time create forward head posture. Many students look down at devices for hours, placing tremendous strain on neck and upper back muscles.
Solution: Position screens at eye level. Encourage proper sitting position with back against chair. Recommend taking a five-minute break every 30 minutes to stretch and look away from screens.
Desk and Chair Height
Classroom furniture isn't always properly sized for individual students. Desks that are too high or chairs that don't provide adequate support create muscle strain.
Solution: Ensure desk height allows your child to rest forearms on the desk with elbows at 90 degrees. Feet should rest flat on floor or footrest. Request furniture adjustments if needed.
Preparing Your Child for Good Posture
Schedule a Pre-School Checkup
A chiropractic evaluation identifies postural issues before school starts. Dr. Ryan Marshall can detect misalignments and provide corrections. He'll also educate your child about proper posture and ergonomics specific to their school environment.
Children who understand why good posture matters are more likely to maintain it. Dr. Marshall explains concepts in age-appropriate ways that resonate with young people.
Strengthen Core Muscles
Strong core muscles support proper posture. Encourage your child to do simple exercises like planks, bridges, and bird dogs. Even 10-15 minutes of core work several times weekly makes significant difference.
Yoga and pilates are excellent for building core strength while teaching body awareness. Many children enjoy these activities more than traditional exercise.
Establish Healthy Habits Now
Help your child develop habits that will serve them throughout school and life:
- Set up proper desk ergonomics at home for homework
- Limit screen time, especially before bed
- Encourage movement and breaks during study sessions
- Model good posture yourself
- Make stretching a family routine
The Competitive Advantage
Students with good posture and healthy spines have advantages over peers with poor posture. They concentrate better, have more energy, experience fewer headaches, and simply feel better throughout the school day.
Academic performance often improves when postural issues are corrected. Teachers frequently notice that students who receive chiropractic care become more engaged in class.
