May 2009 Newsletter

As many of you know my wife Holly and I have been involved with the Little Light House ministry for many years now. This ministry has continued to touch our hearts and truly amaze both of us. We have seen how the Little Light House has blessed Tulsa over the years by caring for children with special needs.

That is why on Tuesday, May 12th, 2009 our office is offering a Chiropractic adjustment to each of our existing patients in exchange for a minimum 25 dollar check made out to the Little Light House.

This is also a great opportunity for you to introduce a friend or family member to Chiropractic care. For every new patient during the week of May the 12th, the initial visit ($195 value) will be offered for a minimum 40 dollar donation to The Little Light House.

The Little Light House is a Christian Developmental Center, serving young children with special needs, from birth through the chronological age of six years. The Little Light House provides highly individualized educational and therapeutic services in a loving Christian environment, all on a tuition-free basis. Because the school is free to the children and a non-profit organization they are solely dependant on donations to continue their incredible ministry. To learn more about the Little Light House please visit their website at www.littlelighthouse.org.

Call today to schedule your appointment for Tuesday, May 13th. I hope to see you there. Have a wonderful day! God Bless.

When to Use Hot or Cold Packs

A patient asked me a very good question last month. “When should I use a hot or cold pack on my back?” Typically within 3 days of an injury or “flare up” ice is best. After the 3 day period heat can be used as well. When you are in doubt use ice, this will help decrease inflammation in the area.

As always, after an injury or “flare up” be sure to have your spine checked as soon as possible to make sure it is nothing serious and to help speed the healing process. Have a great day!

Sincerely,

Dr. Ryan Marshall, D.C.

Muscle Pain

What causes muscle pain? Some common causes are stress, over exertion and repetitive motion. Sore muscles resulting from exercise or other forms of physical stress will most often resolve after a few days. Other causes of muscle pain my stick around until something is done about it.

Stress and repetitive motion are two causes that need to be addressed when dealing with chronic muscle pain. If a muscle is hurting for an extended period of time, then therapy may be necessary. Give us a call anytime for a consultation.

*The number of muscles in the human body varies from about 656 to 850, depending on which source you consult. No exact figure is available because there are a variety of opinions about what constitutes an individual muscle as opposed to a part of a muscle complex. There is also some variability in muscular structure between some individuals.

Sciatica

*Sciatica is described as pain that radiates along the course of the sciatic nerve. The pain is most often down through the area of the buttocks and the back side of the leg to below the knee. It can occur with or without low back pain. We have many patients that have started care here with symptoms just like that.

Sciatica is a very common condition that usually has a very good prognosis with conservative Chiropractic treatment. We have seen excellent results here at Marshall Chiropractic & Wellness Center with our patients who have sciatica.

If you know any one who may be experiencing sciatica like symptoms, don’t hesitate to let them know we can help. Call (918) 494-0929. Thank you and have a blessed day!

Degeneration of the Spine

Thank you all for your continued questions and interest about chiropractic. I want to do my best to give a very detailed answer to a very good question that was asked by one of our patients, Aleta. “How does degeneration happen to the spine?”

When there is a misalignment to the joint, then there is a decrease in movement or range of motion which over time will cause the joint to degenerate. Many years ago after a total knee replacement surgery a patient’s knee would be put into a cast immediately in order to heal. What started happening to a patient that had this done was there knee began to degenerate due to the lack of movement. Today after a total knee replacement, a patient’s knee is put into a device that keeps the knee moving, instead of a cast, in order to prevent this from happening. The reason is now we know that calcium deposits and scare tissue will form quickly in a joint that is immobilized.

When a segment of your spine is not moving, over time it will degenerate also just like the knee would in a cast. That is why it is good “spinal hygiene” to get an adjustment periodically. Three major things can happen to a joint in the spine if it is misaligned for an extended period of time.

1. Atrophy to the nerves (Nerves get smaller)
2. Atrophy to the surrounding muscles (Muscles get smaller)
3. Structural changes to the bone itself, eventually fusion of the bones and loss of joint space.

The Warning Signs & Prevention of Alzheimer’s Disease

We all know or have heard of someone that is affected by Alzheimer’s disease in one form or another. Most of us have also heard some of the familiar symptoms such as: memory loss, difficulty performing familiar tasks, problems with speech or language, disorientation, poor judgment, misplacing things, changes in mood and behavior and loss of initiative.
It is estimated that the number of Alzheimer’s cases has doubled since 1980 and that 4.5 million Americans have the disease now. You may ask, “why such an increase year after year?” The American Chiropractic Association has offered some “natural prescriptions” for Alzheimer’s prevention. Long-term physical activity, engaging in mentally stimulating activities (ex. crossword puzzles), maintaining relationships with other people/social support networks and supplements such as garlic, coenzyme Q10 and omega 3 fatty acids (fish oils) are a few of the “natural prescriptions.”

If you or someone you know are suspicious of Alzheimer’s disease please consult your primary health care physician as soon as possible.

Did you know?

-It is estimated that by the year 2050, 11 to 16 million Americans could be diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

-Mentally stimulating exercises such as reading, math and crossword puzzles can actually build neuron connections in the brain, thus helping prevent Alzheimer’s disease.

Have a wonderful day! God Bless.

Hello Again!

Recently I have had several people ask me, “What does the Wellness Center part of your name mean?” That is a great question.

We have several reasons to be called a wellness center or a wellness based private practice. We have a wide array of vitamins and supplements to naturally promote wellness. But I feel the most important aspect of wellness I can offer is the Chiropractic adjustment.

The Chiropractic adjustment is not only the greatest way to relieve aches and pains, but it is also the best way to prevent degeneration of the spine. And that is true wellness!

Did you know?
-The human body is composed of about 50 trillion cells. Of which none can survive without proper nerve stimulation from the spinal cord.
