Chiropractic Care For Ankle Injuries

Monday, July 25th, 2011

Ankle injuries are quite common and can re occur frequently when not treated properly. Along with the ankle being affected, after an ankle injury you may also develop other issues like knee, foot and back pain. What many people don’t realize is that chiropractic care can be very beneficial to help not only your ankle but any other issues that arise due to the ankle injury.

What Causes Ankle Pain

The most common cause of ankle pain is an ankle sprain. Most sprains happen when an ankle is twisted during  walking, running, jumping etc. When a sprain occurs the ankle will very often swell and become bruised. Additionally, the ligaments can be torn and scar tissue will also form.

Ankle injuries can take a long time to recover. Generally, if it is the first injury to the ankle, you can expect a 4-6 week recovery period and even longer on repeat injuries. If you leave the ankle untreated, you are more likely to have repeat injuries down the road.

What Else Can Be Affected After An Ankle Injury

When you have an ankle injury that is not treated other areas of your body can be affected as well. Most commonly you can expect to possibly experience knee pain, back pain, your arches could collapse, you could have foot pain and more. You may also have joint and ligament issues. Additionally, your ankle may be weak and unstable and not have the range of motion it had prior to your first injury. As you further injure your ankle chances of developing more scar tissue is also high.

How Chiropractic Care Can Help

If you have had an injury to your ankle you can greatly benefit from chiropractic care for your ankle and any other areas of your body that have been affected due to the ankle injury. Chiropractors may use a variety of treatment methods including:

  • Evaluating whether or not you can benefit from insoles or orthotics. Insoles and orthotics can help to make sure your feet are in alignment which in turn can relieve stress on the knees, back, etc.
  • Evaluate and give you exercises that can help to strengthen your ankle which will greatly reduce the chances of a repeat injury.
  • Use of Ultrasound therapy. Ultrasound therapy can be used in the ankle area where the injury occurred. Ultrasound therapy gives off high frequency sound waves that send vibrations over the area being treated. It is like receiving a intense micro massage in the injured area. Ultrasound therapy works to increase blood flow to the area, breaks up scar tissue, reduces inflammation and swelling and also will reduce the pain and speed up the heeling process.
  • Use of Spinal Adjustments. The chiropractor will more than likely recommend spinal adjustments in a treatment plan. When you injure your ankle more often than not you  will experience pain or discomfort in the spinal area which is caused by spinal subluxations. A spinal adjustment will help to realign the spine and alleviate any back pain.

How Long Will Treatment Last

A treatment plan for an injured ankle is ongoing. Initially you may need to visit the chiropractor several times a week. This might last for a week or two. Your visits will then be further apart. Ongoing maintenance care is usually recommended even after the ankle is completely healed.

Everything Else You Need To Know

While some people are apprehensive about visiting a chiropractor, they should not be. On your first visit you can expect to give a medical history, be examined and most often receive your first treatment. Treatments are gentle and relief can very often begin after just one treatment.

Knee and Leg Pain

Friday, July 22nd, 2011

Knee and pain are very common problems for people of all ages. Because we utilize our legs and knees for many daily activities as simple as walking, running, and standing up, risks of injury to these areas of the human body are increased. There are also a multitude of activities and incidents that can lead to knee and leg injuries resulting in pain that ranges from minor to chronic and severe.

Causes of Leg and Knee Pain

Any kind of trauma to the leg area can lead to pain in both the knee and the leg. Trauma can result from stepping the wrong way off of a curb or from more serious incidents such as car accidents, falls, and making contact with objects. Additionally there are genetic conditions that can lead to chronic leg and knee pain including weak alignment and diseases. Oftentimes patients will trigger chronic pain in the knee and leg from overuse or overextension.

Since the leg and knee carry a person’s body weight, pain can result when weight issues are a factor. Regular movement can cause overstressed joints and trigger pain. Misaligned bones and joints in the legs and knees can also lead to other painful conditions including swelling and the inability to move properly. When leg and knee disorders lead to inflammation that goes untreated, it can lead to arthritis.

Leg pain is often associated with muscular problems. The ligaments and tendons in the leg can become strained, torn, or sprained, leading to chronic pain and a difficulty in walking. Leg conditions can exacerbate knee conditions, causing more pain.

Treating Knee and Leg Pain

Chiropractic care can be highly beneficial to patients experiencing painful conditions in their legs and knees. It can also be an effective method for healing after injury or surgeries to treat leg and knee pain.

Chiropractic methods including stretching, joint manipulation, and exercises aimed at strengthening the muscles in the knees and the legs. A chiropractor can evaluate the range of motion you have in your leg and track how your knee is aligned during regular walking and running. Stress on the knee joints can be evaluated to determine its impact on activity.

In addition to chiropractic care to heal and eliminate knee and leg pain, it may be recommended that proper therapeutic shoes and footwear be implemented to provide added protection and strengthening benefits during activity. Many times, improper footwear leads to chronic pain and conditions because shoes are not properly supporting the body. Arch support and adequate cushioning are essential parts of promoting strength and stability in the legs and knees.

Early Treatment Critical

When pain is experienced in either the knee or leg or both at the same time, it is critical that the situation is evaluated as soon as possible. Ignoring pain in any part of the body can lead to more painful conditions and chronic issues that take much more intervention than if an early diagnosis was sought.

Early intervention and proper therapy can be instrumental in eliminating pain and correcting issues that can lead to other problems. A chiropractic evaluation and therapy program can reduce the long-term damage one can incur on their knee joints and legs. If many symptoms and conditions remain untreated, pain can be persistent and limitations on activity can arise, potentially putting you off your feet and unable to work or participate in other activities. With proper attention to the first signs of pain, the potential for more serious medical intervention including surgery may be avoided.

Forward Head Syndrome

Monday, May 9th, 2011

Individuals experiencing ongoing neck pain and stiffness may be dealing with a common and correctable condition known as forward head syndrome.  Also referred to as forward head posture, this condition is usually the result of abnormal, long term neck posture or sudden and intense trauma to the neck.  The condition is often under-diagnosed which may result in mistreatment or under-treatment of the condition.  When this occurs the problems associated with forward head syndrome will continue to plague the patient.  Here we look more closely at this condition and how patients can find relief from the symptoms associated with it.

What Causes Forward Head Syndrome?

Despite the common misdiagnosis of forward head syndrome, this condition is the most common cause of pain in the head, shoulder and neck region.  Patients suffering from forward head syndrome usually fall within two categories.  The first are patients who have experienced some form of trauma to the affected area.  Injuries from car accidents, sporting accidents and other sprains and strains to the neck are common causes of this condition.  The second group of people suffering from this condition do so as a result of poor or abnormal neck posture.  Poor neck posture is often the result of driving, working on a computer, reading and any number of occupations or hobbies which require constant and long term straining of the neck.

Effects of Forward Head Syndrome

When your neck is not properly supported by your spine, there is automatically more pressure put on other muscles and joints to compensate.  Poor posture affects many other areas of your body beyond the area immediately affected.  For example, holding your head at an abnormal angle does not just affect your head, neck and shoulders.  Your blood pressure, lung capacity, mood and most other functions of your body are affected by poor posture.  Whether your poor posture is the result of habitual straining or an unavoidable trauma, the end result is the same; long term pain and unnecessary suffering.  Improper diagnosis and failure to treat the condition can lead to a life long battle to ease pain and function normally, with patients often robbed of energy in the process and unable to participate in activities they enjoy.

Treatment for Forward Head Syndrome

There is relief for patients suffering from forward head syndrome.  With the proper diagnosis and treatment, patients can correct the problem and eliminate the pain and suffering that is commonly reported.  Some of the possible options for patients with forward head syndrome include spinal adjustments, exercises specifically designed to treat the condition and changes which improve the posture.  Depending on the severity of the condition and the underlying cause creating the poor posture, one or all of these options may be needed to correct the problem.  Regardless of which option or options are used, correcting neck and shoulder posture in the present and future are key to reversing the condition.  Without proper posture, the success of other treatments will eventually be lost with the return of pain and other negative side effects from this condition.

Tulsa Chiropractor helps Stress and Tension

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

Just as a chain tends to break at it’s weakest link, we seem to exhibit stress and tension in the weakest areas of our bodies. For some, it’s an upset stomach. For others, it’s headaches, back pain or muscle stiffness.

Chiropractic care is very helpful with reducing stress because our nervous system is affected by stress.  Relieving tension and pressure from nerves in the spine can help alleviate symptoms, like pain and tension.

If we can help pain or tension that has been brought on by the everyday occurrences of stress, let us know!

Chiropractic Care for Neck Pain

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

Millions of people each year suffer from neck pain. Some people find neck pain to be so severe that it can be downright debilitating. Many people with neck pain seek out a chiropractor for care and relief. Chiropractors can treat neck pain and other ailments without the use of drugs or surgery. Instead, they primarily use their hands to perform manipulations to the spine and other joints of the body. The theory behind the chiropractic approach is that when your body is out of alignment your entire musculoskeletal system does not perform properly. By using manipulation to realign the spine and other joints, your body can perform as it should and pain is relieved.

There are numerous types of neck injuries that chiropractors can treat. From whiplash to cervical sprain injuries, chiropractors are highly trained to treat injuries and pain in the neck.

If you have neck pain or a neck injury, your first step will be to find a chiropractor. Check with family and friends for a referral and with your insurance company. Most medical coverage includes chiropractic care and you will want to find a chiropractor that takes your insurance.

On your first visit to a chiropractor you can expect to provide information on your medical history, just as you would at any other doctor’s office. Many chiropractors will then give you an overview of what chiropractic care is and the different techniques that they use. The chiropractor will then perform an extensive chiropractic exam. He or she will look not only at your neck but at your entire spine including the middle and lower back area. Neck pain can be caused by other areas of your spine being out of alignment. The chiropractor is looking for areas of the spine where there is restriction to the joints, where there are muscle spasms and where there might be an alignment injury.

The chiropractor will also feel for tender areas or tight areas and take a look to see if your spinal joints are moving correctly. He or she may have you walk around while they observe your gait and overall posture. All of these things are important to help the Doctor to understand how your spine is working and moving. The chiropractor may also request x-rays or an MRI to help further diagnose the cause of your neck pain.

After the exam, you and your chiropractor will sit down together and come up with a treatment plan. The plan will most likely include a variety of treatment options.

Spinal manipulations are the most common chiropractic treatment.  Spinal manipulation will allow the joints of the spine to resume normal functioning which can decrease and eliminate pain.

Cervical manipulation is another common way to treat neck pain. To perform cervical manipulation the chiropractor will use their hands and twist the neck quickly. As a result the vertebrae in the neck will move back into alignment, reducing pain.

Instrument assisted manipulation is another kind of treatment your chiropractor could use in your therapy. They will use a hand help chiropractic instrument to apply force to the joints without the use of thrusting, making it a safer therapy for patients who have degenerative joint syndrome.

Trigger point therapy is another technique that the chiropractor could use in your treatment plan. He or she will identify tight and or painful spots and use pressure to relieve the pain.

For neck pain treatment, a chiropractor may also use some additional treatments that include therapeutic stretching, massage, ultrasound and electrical stimulation. These additional treatments can help to increase blood flow to the area and decrease pain. They can also help to prevent further injury and prevent recurrent pain.

Tulsa Chiropractor Helps TMJ Pain

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

Temporomandibular Joint or TMJ is the joint located in the jaw area. When this joint becomes irritated or injured it can produce symptoms that are very painful in the jaw area or side of the head.  An inflamed TMJ can even cause headaches.

The cause of TMJ pain is usually from stress and tension and clinching teeth.  If you have had recent dental work done consult your dentist to see if something is causing a misalignment with your bite.

The TMJ is surrounded by muscle that could be very tight. Like I tell everyone if it is a muscle or joint that hurts, I can help! For patients that suffer from TMJ we usually do massage work over the area as well as adjust the joint.  Most patients report immediate relief after chiropractic treatment.

5 Reasons To See A Chiropractor

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

Many people want to know when to visit the doctor.  Some may ask themselves, “Is it too soon or am I being silly going to the doctor for this?”  But sometimes they may be overlooking a serious condition that needs the attention of a doctor.  Once they decide to go to the doctor the next question is, “what type of doctor do I go to?”

Chiropractors are specialty doctors for musculoskeletal pain, mainly back pain.  They specialize in joint and muscle pain and have been mostly known for treating back or neck pain.

So you may now be asking, “when do I go to the chiropractor?” Here are a few good reasons to visit a chiropractic physician.

1.     Are you in pain?  If you are, your body may be trying to tell you something.  Pain the in neck and back area are the most commonly treated areas for chiropractors, but extremity pain is also in their scope of practice.  Extremity pain such as knee, hip, shoulder or wrist pain has been successfully treated by chiropractic care for years.  If it is a muscle or a joint a chiropractor can most likely help.

2.     Prevent a surgery. A recent WebMD article states that chiropractic care may reduce certain surgeries by 32%.  Low back pain that radiates into the leg is most likely caused from a disc impingement.  While this condition may eventually need surgery a chiropractor may be able to prevent the surgery altogether.

3.     Get checked for scoliosis.  This should be done in most schools but can sometimes be overlooked or missed.  Chiropractors are trained to check even the slightest degree of curvature of the spine.  This is a very important point for kids. Most scoliosis in adults will not cause too many problems as long as it is not severe.  Teenagers and younger children should be checked regularly as there are many things they can do to help the scoliosis from becoming a major problem.

4.     After an auto accident.  After any accident for that matter.  Sometimes pain may not show up for days or even years after a serious accident.  Make sure there are no major problems after an accident whether you are in pain or not.  By getting checked you may safe yourself a lot of trouble in the future.

5.     Prevent pain or future problems.  Have you ever wondered how degeneration happens to the spine?  When there is a misalignment to a joint, then there is a decrease in movement or range of motion which over time will cause the joint to degenerate. Many years ago after a total knee replacement surgery a patient’s knee would be put into a cast immediately in order to heal. What started happening to a patient that had this done was there knee began to degenerate due to the lack of movement. Today after a total knee replacement, a patient’s knee is put into a device that keeps the knee moving, instead of a cast, in order to prevent this from happening. The reason is now we know that calcium deposits and scare tissue will form quickly in a joint that is immobilized.  When a segment of your spine is not moving, over time it will degenerate also just like the knee would in a cast. That is why it is good “spinal hygiene” to get a chiropractic adjustment periodically. Three major things can happen to a joint in the spine if it is misaligned for an extended period of time.  First atrophy will happen to the nerves.  Nerves will get smaller. Atrophy to the surrounding muscles tissue of the spine, muscles will get smaller and lose tonicity.  The last thing that will happen is an actual structural change to the bone itself, eventually fusion of the bones and loss of joint space can occur.

If you have never been to a chiropractic doctor remember some of the things that may warrant a visit.  And you will be sure to have a healthy spine for years to come!

Sincerely,

Dr. Ryan Marshall, D.C.
